Snagit's Smart Redact is a genuinely good feature. It auto-detects addresses, credit cards, dates, emails, faces, IP addresses, phone numbers, Social Security numbers, and URLs, and it processes them locally (techsmith.com/snagit/features/smart-redact). If you already live in Snagit, it may be all you need.
The reason people look for an alternative is usually one of two things: the price model, or the fact that redaction is one small part of a large capture suite. macshot is a free, open-source capture tool for macOS. It installs via Homebrew or a direct download. If you are comfortable with developer-flavored distribution and want one free tool that does everything, it is an excellent pick. Do not overlook the tool already on your Mac. Preview's Markup can draw a solid black rectangle over anything and export a flattened PNG. It is free, fully offline, and perfectly adequate for the occasional screenshot. Its only weakness is that it is entirely manual.
